The Umbwe Route is one of the challenging routes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It is a short and steep route, known for its rugged terrain and stunning scenery. 6 DAYS UMBWE ROUTE ITINERARY
Day 1: Departure from the hotel to Umbwe Cave Campsite.
Altitude Change: 1200m to 1700m to 2850m.
Distance Covered: 10 km.
Hiking Duration: 4-5 hours.
Habitat: Montane forest.
Commence your trek by being picked up from the hotel and transported to Umbwe Gate. After completing the necessary gate registration procedures, embark on a journey through the rainforest to reach Umbwe Cave Campsite. The campsite will welcome you with pre-set tents. Take a break for dinner and spend the night surrounded by the lush, dense forest as you traverse ridges and valleys.
Day 2: Umbwe Cave Campsite to Barranco Hut Campsite.
Altitude Change: 2850m to 3950m.
Distance Covered: 9 km.
Hiking Duration: 4-5 hours.
Habitat: Montane forest and heather.
Following breakfast, trek through the remaining forest, entering the moorland and heath zone. Enjoy panoramic views of Barranco valleys and the ice cap atop the mountain. Arrive at Barranco Camp for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 3: Barranco Campsite to Karanga Campsite.
Altitude Change: 3950m to 3900m.
Distance Covered: 6 km.
Hiking Duration: 4-5 hours.
Habitat: Moorland.
Embark on a shorter day walk. In the late morning, ascend the Barranco Wall, reaching 4200m for acclimatization. Cross ridges and valleys to Karanga Campsite for a hot lunch. After a brief rest, trek up the screed slopes towards the Southern ice field, then return to the camp for dinner and the night.
Day 4: Karanga Campsite to Barafu Campsite.
Altitude Change: 3900m to 4620m.
Distance Covered: 5 km.
Hiking Duration: 3-4 hours.
Habitat: Alpine Desert.
Trek up to Barafu Ridge Campsite, facing the challenge of altitude. The terrain is steep, requiring a slow pace to prevent fatigue and altitude sickness. Traverse the alpine desert with a brisk, cold wind as you approach the Kibo glaciers. Have lunch and an early dinner, followed by rest until midnight when the summit climb begins.
Day 5: Barafu Hut Campsite to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Hut Campsite.
Altitude Change: 4620m to 5895m to 3100m.
Distance Covered: 15 km.
Hiking Duration: 10-12 hours.
Habitat: Desert and ice.
Commence the day around midnight with a light breakfast and final preparations for the summit ascent. Aim to reach Uhuru Peak shortly before or after sunrise. Begin the ascent at 12:00 am, navigating steep scree or possibly snow. Reach Stella Point on the crater rim at 5,861m between 4 and 5 am, offering stunning views of the crater and its icecaps. After an hour of hiking along the Kibo crater rim, reach Kilimanjaro’s true summit, Uhuru Peak. Spend some time for photos, then descend to Barafu Huts campsite, have lunch, rest, collect equipment, and continue the descent through moorland and heath zone to Mweka Huts campsite. Conclude the day with dinner and overnight at Mweka Hut campsite.
Day 6: Mweka Hut Campsite to Mweka Gate.
Altitude Change: 3100m to 1700m.
Distance Covered: 9 km.
Descent Duration: 3-4 hours.
Habitat: Montane forest.
Descend from Mweka Hut campsite to Mweka Gate, crossing through the Montane forest. The descent will take approximately 3-4 hours. Sign out at the gate and prepare for the vehicle transfer back to the hotel in Moshi for certificate presentation and a well-deserved celebration, marking the end of your mountain adventure.
